ArenaNet gives us an example of how to describe our character based on its specializations.
"I am a ranger specializing in Marksmanship, Wilderness Survival, and Beastmastery."
"I am a druid specializing in Nature Magic and Skirmishing."
The reason the second is different is because the druid part is an elite specialization. For those who didn't read the newest ArenaNet articles GO READ THEM.
Basically, each class gets to choose 3 specializations. So Elementalists could specialize in Water, Earth, and Fire. Now, the upcoming new profession classes are called Elite Specializations, like Druid, or whatever they call the Necromancer wielding the greatsword, or the Engineer wielding the hammer.
These are Elite Specializations and they take up one spot of the three available specializations. So when a ranger decides to choose the Druid elite specialization, they become a Druid profession.
But it irks me, because I think the system could be slightly better.
It irks me how we have base classes, like the Ranger, that can specialize into an Elite Specialization and become the Druid. It makes the Druid just seem like a mini-class, a sub-class. The Druid should be equal to the Ranger, two equal professions for the same character.
That is why I feel the Ranger should be an Elite Specialization. Let people, when they create their character, choose one Elite Specialization to obtain at creation. So players can choose Druid and have it automatically unlocked, but they won't get access to Ranger until level 80. Or the other way around. I think that would make more sense and would allow for more Elite Specializations in the future.
It feels weird because there will be players that don't equip any Elite Specializations, and they'll just be Rangers. But then some will equip the Druid specialization, which you'd be stupid not too, and they'll get a new weapon, and a new profession title as Druid. It feels like it's a no-brainer, like which Rangers are going to choose not to become a Druid? It doesn't feel like an option between Ranger and Druid and more just feels like an eventual evolution of the Ranger, a planned upgrade.
Let people choose between Ranger and Druid, with each having their benefits and issues. So that when new Elite Specializations come out, and I hope each class does get like 2-3 Elite Specializations in the future, there will truly be options for each class. Do I want to go Ranger, Druid, Tarzan, or Archer. Real options.
I guess when they eventually add a second Elite Specialization to each class, we will have a true option. Go Druid or go Tarzan (beast master spec -- makes sense). But I guess I wish the true profession, Ranger, felt more like an Elite Specialization option.
